News hasn't been good since I got here. There's fires here and there and everywhere.

I swear I had nothing to do with them.

As I was coming home after work this evening, driving on the 101, I could see the mountains. They're pretty much covered in smoke. This is proving to be one interesting time down here.

In other news, I still miss San Francisco. I did go up for a visit last weekend. On the way back down, I saw tons of fire trucks driving on the 5 on their way to battle the blazes. Most of them were from the Bay Area. Represent!

All apologies about missing yesterday's post. I've been trying to download that damned Radiohead album the last couple of days. I knew I should have pre-ordered it.

Now, where were we?

Oh, yes. Los Angeles.

The week is waning and I'm due down there on Monday morning. I have a list of things I need to do before I leave, yet nothing has been accomplished. Although, that's typical of my life. Thankfully it's not a complete move. I just need to bring some essentials down with me for the time being. A friend has graciously allowed me use of a room in her apartment for a while.

What I really want is a burrito. I know I won't be able to get a decent San Francisco-style burrito down in The Valley. The bright side is that I'll be up in San Francisco almost every weekend. Even if I arrive late at night, El Farolito is open until 4 a.m. God bless 'em.

At this moment it's sunny in Los Angeles, while I don't think I've seen the sun all day up here in San Francisco.

My move down to Southern California will raise a very interesting question. That being, "Which is better: The perpetual sunshine L.A. or San Francisco's perpetually fickle autumn-like weather?"

I have all these awesome clothes that are perfect for San Francisco's weather. Most of my wardrobe consists of clothing that are perfect for the perpetual autumn of San Francisco. Sweaters are great because they can hide your belly.

I'll no longer be able to hide my belly!

Heart Week kicks off... NOW!

Okay, kids! Here's the big news. As our ol' pal in Portland mentioned, Good Ol' T.A.F.K.A.Y.E.L.R.A. got himself a job. (Thanks for the congrats, btw)

That's the good news. The bad-news-that's-not-really-bad-but-pretty-good is that the job is in Southern California. In fact, it's within the confines of the city of Hollywood. No, I'm not working for a big studio. Nor am I going to walk the streets at night selling my sexual talents for money.

I will be working in the film-related industry. Which, is darn good 'cuz my Cinema degree was going to waste the last several months.

The only thing is that I'll be leaving my beloved city of San Francisco for a while. I had stated previously that things were getting a tad hairy up here. A change will do me good for a while.

Where does this leave this blog? After all, its name comes from a street in San Francisco where DDT/PDX used to live and where the first stencils were spotted. Don't fret because Los Angeles has street art as well. Plus, Mrs. T.A.F.K.A.Y.E.L.R.A. has to finish school up in SF. Looks like I'll be taking advantage of the $39 one way trips on Southwest a lot for a while.

So, you'll be seeing a lot more graffiti from SoCal here. Plus, I'm going to attempt to keep up with all of our friends up in The Paris of the West during my weekend visits. Additionally, the Portland Crew will be keeping up the good work. We'll also post pix from the places we visit and the places friends visit.

So... There you have it. The Painted Ground is establishing a Hollywood office. We promise to never name drop. More to come later in the week.

We interviewed him for the Sentinel on more than one occasion and it was clear to us that this man was the guy you wanted at such a post. More vision from Potter, we guess.

On a totally unrelated, but still fully inside baseball, our dear partner T.A.F.K.A.Y.E.L.R.A. deserves a hearty shout-out for landing his first big post-school J.O.B. Congrats! One hopes you'll post more than JM, yeah?

Greetings from the Garden Isle of Kaua'i! T.A.F.K.A.Y.E.L.R.A. and family members are away for a while because there's a marriage over here.

But, I have not forgotten my main passion. Unfortunately, there's not much graffiti out here. Much of the graffiti is stickers from surf clothes companies. There are, however, some diamonds in the rough. This fella was found at Ke'e Beach.

What else is new...?

Oh, hmmm...

Yeah. Not much news happens over on the islands. The mainland is far, far away. People are a little upset over a super ferry. My wife's Lola (great-aunt to us whiteys) is coming over on it tomorrow. Hope she makes it.

There are a lot of chickens on this island. It's pretty sweet. Except in the morning when the roosters crow. I'm craving adobo right now.

Also... we found the best shave ice place on the island. I recommend the ice cream bowl with macadamia nut ice cream, topped with vanilla and banana syrups. Ohh... and you gotta top it with condensed milk. Mmmmm.

AND! I also found out the origins of Puff the Magic Dragon. Turns out the three mountains in Hanalei Bay resemble a dragon. They're constantly surrounded by mists, hence the autumn mist reference. Swear.

That's about it. I gotta go. I'm on vacation, dammit!

The Mission Stencil Story

I've been ignoring this for a while, because everyone else has been jumping on top of it as well.

But, I must remember the motto of the Painted Ground. Yes, the motto I just made up: "Record all the ephemeral street art before it fades or gets buffed. This is for the future generations!'

I'm thinking that the motto has to be refined a bit.

To date, I have 34 pictures of confirmed stencils from the Mission Stencil Story. An additional two in the set are unconfirmed. The final one has been buffed. We shall never know what it said. I'm working on finding more, courtesy of this map.

I had to go through a lot to get these. Including, climbing to the top of 20th Street and Sanchez to get the happy ending. They didn't make it easy on the readers, did they? Also, I got a lot of weird looks from Mexicans hanging out on Mission Street. I always get weird looks from Mexicans when I take pictures of graffiti. In addition to all taht, I had to evade a rather unattractive prostitute at 17th and Capp for one. In broad daylight, nonetheless!

The things I do for... Wait, why do I do this? So far, there is no monetary gain for it. Hint. Hint.

As I sat atop the hill at Dolores Park the other day a feeling of dread came upon me. I couldn't help but feel that the beautiful city we live in is changing in an almost astronomical speed.

We here at the Painted Ground rarely make direct social commentaries. Instead, we often let others speak for us. Sort of social commentary by proxy, if you will. Perhaps it's safer that way.

Unfortunately, as someone who loves San Francisco, I can't ignore what has been happening. Forgive me for my direct commentaries.

Sitting atop the hill at Dolores Park, one cannot ignore the breathtaking view of downtown San Francisco. I've lived in this city for several years now. Every time I'm riding the J Church or just happen to be at the park, I make a point of looking out at the cityscape. In one way, it provides a setting for me. It reminds me of where I am and where I've come from. It also is a representation of my adopted home. It brings me joy.

In the last year and a half, we have all been witness to the rising of the massive elephant in the room. It's there and we no longer can ignore it. While there is a sense of pride that it brings to this city (being the tallest all-residential tower west of the Mississippi), I can't help but think that it will bring on the beginning of massive change in our home.

These growing pains are starting to be felt exponentially in the Mission, where a temporary victory was won following the dot-com bubble burst. There are numerous projects looming overhead, threatening to finish off what was halted several years ago.

Yes, as a once-Midwesterner I can see the benefits of a 24-Hour Walgreen's. Yet, I can't help but think that those living above this Walgreen's will not be welcome in the Mission. All the chanting of "Si Se Puede!" will not prevent them from coming, unfortunately. These people who can afford luxury condos will most likely have the most impact on the neighborhood. I can guarantee that the daylaborers waiting outside the former paint store will not be allowed to go anywhere near this building. Soon they will all but disappear from Cesar Chavez Street.

The Mission is starting to drastically change. The stores that have been there the longest have started to disappear. No longer do we have the uber-eccentric video store Leather Tongue. In its place is the place on Valencia Street to buy a $300 pair of jeans. La Casa del Libro also has departed for places unknown. I walked by the other day and noticed exercise equipment being set up inside. While I'm all for exercising (and have been known to do so from time to time) I just worry about who they are catering to considering the recent goings-on in San Francisco.

It's not just the Mission. This is being felt by many residents who just want affordable housing.

Two-thirds of the Painted Ground have decided that Portland, Oregon is their new home. Affordability was a major factor in their decisions. Apparantly so have many others from our fine city, causing an animosity from those who have called Portland their home for so many years. As the remaining third, I'm not sure if I want to follow in their footsteps. I sure as hell don't see the Sunset, the Richmond, or Daly City as viable options. I don't like fog every single day.

Perhaps New York City is the place for t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a. and family? There's more room out that way. Of course, affordability will also play a major factor.

I'll always love San Francisco and what it represents for me. I'm not sure how much longer we can ignore the fact that it's changing.

Time for the ape to bring out the guitar! You know you've been waiting for it all week. I know I have.

A couple of random thoughts:

The other day I made dinner for my wife in order to prove that I am worthy of her love or something like that. I made this wonderful artichoke heart and basil pasta. Believe you me it was deeeeelicious. The only problem is that I chopped up some garlic. Now, I can't get the garlic smell out of my left index fingernail. It's really annoying me.

Just thought I'd share with you.

Speaking of the wife, she left our camera in San Jose the last weekend. She's too lazy to drive down there. She better get it soon or I'm gonna get fat.

I suppose I should explain that.

If I don't have the camera, I can't go on a walk to take pictures. Ol' t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a and his faithful pup like to walk around the Mission and scour for graffiti. Without the camera I'm gonna turn into Chet. Sadly, I feel it coming on soon.

Also, somebody hit a couple of dingers yesterday. Despite all the controversy and whatnot, I cant' help but be excited.

Really. No lie.

Just think, it coulda been Jeff Kent. Ponder that for a moment.

The Painted Ground just got back from Sin City where it was so damned hot. Seriously. When temperatures go past 110º, the only thing to do is soak in the pool. God bless Mandalay Bay.

'Twas a nice respite, we must say so. As usual, the assortment of people on vacation was interesting and fun to look at. They were strange and mesmerizing. And, depending upon which casino we were at, a tad backwards. Them's the breaks when it comes to Vegas.

The one good thing about this vacation is that we didn't see much obsession over technology. The iPhone hype was millions of miles away. We only saw one guy with a Bluetooth hooked to his ear. We sneered at him with derision.

(Speaking of phones: You know that e-mail that's been floating around about new laws taking effect on July 1st? Yeah, that's a bunch of malarkey. Consider this our community service for the day.)

Heck, we were so far away from reality that we didn't find out about the ado in Glasgow until Monday morning.

The above picture is courtesy of Bordeaux, Aquitaine, France. We snapped it in a part of town where the Algerian community lives, which was the best place in town to get graffiti. Most there dealt with issues of politics and identity. This one says, "I am waiting for the bombs." We thought that this really sums up a lot of things.

We've been wanting to use this stencil for over a year now ever since we found it at San Francisco State University. SFSU! We know! It's like finding a stencil in the suburbs.

We've been dragging our feet on this one. Perhaps it's because we couldn't think of anything we loved, other than our wife (stop making fun of us). Whatever the reason is, the day has finally come.

The Painted Ground has been finding these strange scribblings all around the city for the last year or so. Our original meeting came when we discovered some scribblings on a piece of paper. Not sure what to do with it, we tucked it away in a drawer somewhere. (What can we say? We were into collecting found items at the time.) Now it seems that this spurned person is venturing into sticker territory.

We're not entirely sure what it all means. Nor are we sure what a reed has to do with AIDS. Although, we're pretty certain we know how the word "anal" figures into this. Perhaps an oboe was... oh, no.. it's far too disturbing to think about.

The curious part is that we found a couple of these stickers just laying on the sidewalk, not affixed to anything. We then saw one stuck to the side of the 26 bus. Alas, we didn't have time to whip out the Olympus.

Others have found similar notes, it seems. One is marring our new pal Thylacine Graphics' work. Another sheds some light on the Mysterious Mr. Stroud's region of origin.

What a strange predicament. Whatever you do, stay away from anyone named Glen Stroud for the time being.

t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a and company attended a show last night in the House that Bill and Jerry built. We went to see our pal Leslie from the Great White North, who happened to have an ursine Brooklyn-based quartet precede her on stage. An excellent show, we must say. Not to rub it in, but a BSS friend stopped by during the encore. Excellent.

While at the venerated venue, t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a. got to thinking. Mostly about how this year marks the a big birthday for the history of San Francisco and a certain city 115 miles to our south. If you get a chance, check out this program. Although it is on a Viacom-owned channel that somehow has snarkily lost its direction (as has its junior counterpart), it's a fun time for all. Also, to commemorate this momentous summer, the History Channel has been running this debacle. It was just a tad too counter-counterculture for our tastes.

Our money, as always, is on the classics.

This also got us thinking about the above stencil. Why is there hatred against the hippies now?

Sure, the former hippies are fighting the crusty punks in the Upper Haight, another fine (if not justified) example of counter-counterculture.

Yet, the legacy still lives on in this fine city and the rest of the country has adopted many of its practices. We're still fighting the good fight against a leader that is misdirecting our country. We're doing our damnedest to save the only planet we have.

Depressing things aside, we are blessed to have so many fine acts that have smaller venues to play in. While the rest of the world can have their intelligence insulted over and over again, there are those of us who beg differently. Perhaps those who seek out alternative entertainment are counterculture themselves? t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a. hope he's not grasping at straws here.

The Painted Ground Went South for the Weekend

What a weekend! Two weddings, a bachelorette party (don't ask), and tons of food. And that was just Friday and Saturday.

t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a. wishes he could talk about Sunday, but he can't remember it. Alcohol and family from out of town is a dangerous combination.

Girafa was spotted in San Jose on Friday. This fella sure gets around.

Did you know that last call in California is 2 am, but for some reason San Jose sees it different. At 1:30, the lights come on in the clubs. At that point you have to leave. If you don't, we're pretty sure the numerous police officers mobbing the streets and parking lots will tell you to. Reason #4671 why Mr. and Mrs. t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a. moved North.

The problem with San Francisco is what everyone else says: We live in a bubble. It's true, y'know. We do.

We are shocked to discover that it actually gets warm in the Bay Area. We have so many cool, grey, windy summer days that we think it's the norm. We tend to forget that across the bridge the sun actually is shining.

We think that our restaurants are the best on the West Coast.

Okay, okay... That one is true. Don't get us started on the burrito debate.

The point being is that the people who feed our brains and contribute (unknowingly) to the content of this blog aren't just active in San Francisco. We see works from our favorite artists in Berkeley and Oakland. Some of them are venturing to the South Bay, too. In fact, the fine City of Milpitas has their panties bunched up over one of our pals (warning: pdf).

We say that Girafa is bring some much-needed joy to this smelly town. And when we say "smelly," we mean smelly! The town is next to Alviso, which happens to have a large waste dump. It smells like poop during the summer. That's not even a joke, it's true.

That rumbling in the city is courtesy of a mass exodus. The Lexington Ladies are expecting their friends soon. The Boys are, too.

"WTF," You may ask?

Yes, it's that time of the year again.

While it's important for these things to happen, it can be a bit too much. If you've seen it, you've seen it. Perhaps t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a. is getting old and curmudgeon-like. Perhaps t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a. doesn't relate to this contingent of the city on moments like this. Perhaps t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a can't afford those leather chaps he's been wanting.

Nevertheless, we're going to have a mass exodus of our own in the Painted Ground South to attend a wedding in San Jo'. To those who are going to partake in the festivities, The Painted Ground wishes you a good time. Clean up after yourselves and turn all the lights off when done.

And, yes, t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a. just realized that his finger is obscuring part of the picture. I don't have Photoshop on my new computer, so I can't crop the picture. Deal with it.

A lot of hubbub has been made of this list: The Hot 100 List according to AfterEllen.com. AfterEllen is... a *GASP!* lesbian publication. It seems that lesbians have better taste than the sex-starved prepubescent editors at FHM and Maxim. Imagine that.

So, we here at the Painted Ground North HQ live in the City of Roses, and every year they have this thing celebrating the lovely things called, well, the Rose Festival, culminating in a extremely popular parade. Like most parades, it can get pretty crowded for viewers, but at some point locals have come up with a way of "saving" their spots along the parade route: they tape the outlines of their "spot" a la Les Nesmann and come on parade morning to said "spot" ready to battle anyone who might be in "their" place.

We know, we all thought it was weird, too, when we saw it for the first time last year. We thought, "How odd. Maybe there's a law for it, or something." Well, there's no law and this year, "Tapegate" threatens to overtake the 100th anniversary of the festival. No word on what the PLA's stance on it would be.

One Year Later and the World is Still Here

Wow. Can you believe it's been a year already? We came out of that one with flying colors. Although, we regret we waited two days later to post this picture. Alas, we all can't be perfect.

And, hey! We almost forgot to mark the one year anniversary of the establishment of the Painted Ground North. Don't worry, we are still promising to visit the satellite office. We promise.

But, we digress. The subject at hand is the fact that we sit here, one year later, and the world is still here. Of course, the world hasn't changed much. It's a bit worse for wear, we're afraid. We're still stuck in a quagmire halfway around the world; Scooter will probably get pardoned any second from now; Russia is threatening a new cold war (really?); and, finally, celebrities are still the ones pointing out the bad things. *Sigh* Is there nothing they can do wrong?

On a lighter side... t.a.f.k.a.y.e.l.r.a. is still looking for a job. Yes, we know that's not funny, but we got a kick out of this. Somehow we feel connected to it.

Back from the Dead: Gentrification in the Mission

The report of our death is an exaggeration. In fact, we're making up that report right now to cover up the fact that three lazy asses haven't touched this site in the last month.

Things have been a bit odd over in the world of the Painted Ground. It seems that the Mission has been severely lacking in cool graffiti these days. Our theory is that the weather has been so up and down, that people are afraid that the rain will come and wash it all away. Plus, there's been a helluva lot of construction goin' on up and down Valencia Street. Perhaps, the people are are waiting until the concrete has dried?

Our neighborhood is sure changing, though. The site formerly known as Guerrero Street Gardens has moved, leaving a nice empty lot between 22nd and 23rd Streets. We're sure some developer is eying the spot as we speak. Alas, some more housing that we cannot afford will probably be built there, much like those planned for Valencia Street.

Damn! And we just got rid of KFC last year. Plus, Frjtz is finally opening in a few weeks. Why must our harmony be disrupted?

Is this the end, dear friends of the Painted Ground? Mull it over while we contemplate a move to the Bay View.

Walking around the Mission these days, you might notice a lot of buffing going on. Especially on those nifty little newspaper boxes. The above picture was taken right by the Octavia Street offramp that is usually covered with cool graffiti. We think it's the same old guy that tears down fliers every morning. We saw him once. He just does not like those fliers.

The sad thing is that the buff is growing, like a dastardly virus that threatens to kill us all.

Will it put the Painted Grounders out of a non-paying hobby job?

The Eye Heart U lady was out in full force this weekend. Apparently she also loves giraffes, lions, and other beasts of the dark continent.

T.A.F.K.A.Y.E.L.R.A witnessed the Eye Heart U lady creating one of her masterpieces in front of Valencia Whole Foods yesterday afternoon. Her three friends were hanging out and watching. Such is the life!

This is why I try not to watch television so much, unless when I am sick... which I was last night. There, you have my excuse.

Plus, what's the deal with comedians from the 80s hosting programs that are passed off as games shows? First there was the guy that was funny until he stopped doing the glove trick, then the dirtiest man alive known best for being a family-friendly comedian, now the idiot responsible for too many redneck jokes (and this monstrosity's popularity).
